Texan Cultures Project

The Texan Cultures Project is a virtual exhibition featuring the research of the Fall 2022 Foundations of Museum Studies course, in collaboration with the Institute of Texan Cultures

and as part of the 2022-2023 Digital Humanities Fellows Program. The Fundamentals of Museum Studies course consists of art students, history, anthropology and other majors. Connecting cultures and immigration experiences from different continents, students worked in the “Japanese,” “African American,” and “Czech” sections of the ITC and collected materials from the ITC and UTSA Special Collections archives on the heritage and civil rights movement of South Texas. Topics include Japanese immigrants and immigration stories in Texas; African American quilting heritage and current practice; 19th c. Texas fashion and textiles; Czech immigrant kitchen during the Great Depression, cross-border art from the UTSA collection, San Antonio Parks – their flora and art, and Mexican Textiles and Flora. Posters are printed of the projects as well, which will be displayed at ITC with QR codes relating to this website. Finally, the interactive Chinese Theater website connects the visitors with  the 2023 Asian Festival, organized by UTSA and ITC.

Learn more about these local topics, as well as objects and practices transported by immigrants to become a part of Texas culture, under Projects!
